The Ghana Students Association of Research, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Creative Arts (GSAREICA) expresses deep anger, grave concern, and total condemnation over the shocking 90% increment in hostel fees at Pent Hostel of the University of Ghana.
This decision is not just unfair,it is exploitative, insensitive, and morally indefensible.
At a time when Ghanaian students are struggling to survive rising costs of living, academic expenses, and economic hardship, imposing such a drastic increase is nothing short of an attack on the dreams and future of students. It reflects a dangerous shift where profit is being placed above people, and where the basic needs of students are being treated as commodities for exploitation.
Let it be stated clearly and without apology:
Student accommodation is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
It is a fundamental pillar that supports learning, safety, and academic excellence. Denying students affordable accommodation is equivalent to denying them access to education itself.
GSAREICA therefore calls on the Ministry of Works and Housing Ghana, under which the Rent Control Department Ghana operates, as well as the management of the University of Ghana, to act with urgency and authority to:
Immediately halt and reverse this unjustified 90% increment
Investigate the basis of this increase and hold responsible parties accountable
Establish clear regulatory measures to prevent exploitation within student housing
GSAREICA further calls on the Honourable Minister for Education and the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, to intervene and ensure that this decision is immediately reviewed and revised in the interest of Ghanaian students.
We also call on policymakers, education stakeholders, and civil society to rise against this growing trend of commercializing student survival.
GSAREICA will not remain silent while students are pushed to the margins. We stand ready to mobilize, advocate, and defend the rights of every Ghanaian student whose future is being threatened by such reckless decisions.
This is not just about fees.
This is about fairness, dignity, and the right to education.
Enough is enough.
